Medical Qualifications

Mr Richard Smith qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1982 and went on to complete a Medical Doctorate in 1992. He became a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London, in 1988 and was awarded Fellowship of the College in 2000.

Medical Experience

Mr Smith is a member of the British Gynaecological Cancer Society, the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, the British Society of Psychosomatic Obstetrics Gynaecology and Andrology (UK), and the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy. He is co-inventor of abdominal radical trachelectomy, which is a procedure allowing women with cervical cancer to preserve fertility. Mr Smith is Chairman of Uterine Transplantation UK, Leader of the Uterine Transplant Research Group and Lead Surgeon for the Gestational Trophoblastic Disease Unit, Charing Cross Hospital.

Mr Smith is a Consultant Gynaecological Surgeon at the West London Gynaecological Cancer Centre, Hammersmith Hospital of Imperial College London and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. He is also Adjunct Associate Professor in Gynaecology at NYU Medical School, New York.

Mr Smith specialises in gynaecological surgery including oncological and complex benign surgery, with a particular emphasis on fertility-sparing surgery. He is interested in the treatment of complex fibroids, colposcopy procedures and also infection problems in gynaecology. He is available for private appointments at The Lister Hospital, London.
